Deep in Bavaria

The funding for screenplays has not only revitalised “Aliens in Upper Bavaria“, but has also enabled me to finally dig deeper into Bavarian history and actually find out what the origins of the Bavarians really are. I am currently criss-crossing Bavaria, visiting old and discovering new favourite places and asking all sorts of people, from the museum caretaker in Burghausen to the director of the Bavarian Costume Research Institute in Benediktbeuern. All this in an attempt to pierce through the Sepplhütige folklore of Bavaria and get to its roots. Because even if the Sepplhut wearers say so, Bavarians didn’t always wear lederhosen and the dirndl was actually invented at the end of the 19th century for city dwellers on summer holidays in the countryside. More of these and similar stories soon, along with some nice new photos of secret Bavarian places and videos of shoe-slapping aliens. The real truth about the Sepplhut wearers will hopefully be revealed in the new script in autumn.
